(1) evaluate generator voltage and frequency regulation. Each UPS has a set input voltage and frequency range. If the threshold is exceeded, the UPS power will refuse to switch to the standby generator and continue to use battery power. If the frequency or voltage range of the generator is too wide for UPS to follow, the UPS control system may interpret the standby generator as an unstable power source. If this happens, the UPS will always keep the battery powered, which eventually leads to complete battery depletion and load interruption.


(2) adjust the power of standby generator. The greater the generator's power, the more stable the frequency, so the more surges it needs to deal with when UPS stops using battery-stored power and starts getting power from the generator. With this in mind, it is best to determine the power of the standby generator as long as the budget allows, and allow for some potential growth with generator-friendly UPS. It should be noted that different types of generator, UPS, and regulator will affect the supplier's ability to ensure that UPS is successfully compatible with and matches generators. Therefore, the general adoption of UPS with capacity above 25kVA is generally recommended as follows:


* A mechanical-speed standby generator powered by gasoline, propane, and natural gas generates three times the power of the load (including UPS input power, room air conditioning, and all other equipment that must be maintained online).


The power of backup generators equipped with electronic governors is 1.25 to 1.5 times the total load power.


(3) consider the source of fuel. The most common fuel options for generators include propane, natural gas and diesel, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Generators using propane and natural gas fuels respond slowly and require greater power than diesel generators. Diesel is widely regarded as one of the best fuels and is mainly used in 50 kW and larger generator solutions. However, the storage life of diesel is very short, and its storage cost will make the budget tight.


(4) don't neglect the governor. Most generators are equipped with governors that limit the speed of fuel delivered to the engine to a safe level when the load changes and stabilize the generator's output voltage and frequency. The electronic governor responds quickly, while the slower speed of the mechanical governor may lead to calibration.


(5) consider the UPS topology. The topology type of UPS also affects the compatibility and configuration of UPS and standby generators, because not all UPS can compensate for frequency variations without relying on batteries. Backup UPS and online interactive UPS use batteries to prevent frequency changes from affecting protected loads. Therefore, the unstable frequency of the generator may lead to the conversion of UPS to battery power when the generator is running. On the other hand, the dual transform online UPS has a wider input voltage and frequency range. It recreates the sine, waves and filters out frequency variations as part of its normal operation, thereby extending battery life.


(6) consulting manufacturers. Typically, companies need to understand the intended uses that generator manufacturers have tested and allowed their products to be used in conjunction with UPS to avoid a range of potential problems such as UPS being unable to match generator power. To ensure that UPS is better matched to generator power, consult UPS and generator manufacturers before purchasing these devices. In addition, the expected load power required to protect is also known in the manufacturer's specifications.
